Reviving your Garden from Winter Damage

Winter damage to trees and shrubs is inevitable. These tips will help revive your garden and get it ready for the spring:

Trim broken branches to the nearest healthy stem.

Stake bent trees only until they strengthen themselves to stand on their own without a stake.

Tracks on your newly revealed lawn are caused by small rodents called Voles. Check out this great article from U.C. Davis for more information about Voles and how to control them: http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/PESTNOTES/pn7439.html

Rake up dead grass and fill in bare areas with good amendment and water and fertilize the lawn. The bare areas will fill in within 3-4 weeks.

With larger areas of damage, re-seed the lawn. Cover the seed lightly and keep moist.

Raking lawns should only be done when all wet areas are dried or you could damage the lawn.

Apply pre-emergents to your flower beds now before weeds have a chance to germinate.
